AHF Food for Health: Fighting Food Insecurity and Improving Lives

AHF launched the Food for Health program in 2021 to address the growing food insecurity crisis in America. The program aims to provide nutritious food, improving both the physical and mental health of clients and their communities. Over the past year alone, the initiative has served 75,000 individuals and impacted over 250,000 lives through the tireless efforts of Carlos Marroquin, National Director of Food for Health Programs, and a dedicated team of staff and volunteers.

The AHF Food for Health model stands out among other food pantries’ operations. Built on a community-based framework, each food distribution event is tailored to meet the culture and needs of the people it serves. Beyond food distribution, the program offers pantry services, affordable hot meals, and food education. Its key goals include:

  • Improving health outcomes
  • Fighting food insecurity
  • Promoting preventative care
  • Supporting vulnerable populations
  • Enhancing community well-being
  • Advancing the human right to food

Spreading Joy During the Holiday Season

This holiday season, the Food for Health team has been hard at work organizing events across the country to bring joy and alleviate hardship during a period of increased financial and emotional stress. Throughout the Fall and Winter, the program has focused on supporting the most affected populations—seniors, youth, people living with chronic illnesses, and veterans—during holidays like Thanksgiving, Veteran’s Day, and the upcoming Christmas celebrations.

For Thanksgiving, hundreds of turkeys, fresh produce, and pantry staples were distributed to those in need in California, Florida, and Maryland at AHF clinics and in surrounding communities.

On Veteran’s Day, the Food for Health team proudly launched its newest initiative, the “Heroes Pantry.” Held every Friday at the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center, this program provides vital food services to veterans, a group disproportionately affected by food insecurity, chronic illnesses, and mental health challenges. During its opening event, Food for Health partnered with Out of the Closet to provide free clothing and SevaSphere, a fellow nonprofit, to serve hot meals. The initiative aims to support approximately 400 veterans and their families weekly.

Looking Ahead: Ambitious Goals for 2025

The Food for Health program has no plans to slow down after the holidays. Its goals for 2025 include:

  • Establishing a National Food Council
  • Organizing a National Conference on food as a health determinant
  • Launching a media campaign on food insecurity and food deserts
  • Developing healthcare provider toolkits
  • Creating a multi-state urban agriculture coalition
  • Advocating for healthy food retail policies
  • Opening new locations and programs near AHF sites
  • Implementing nationwide pantry mentorship programs

Celebrating the Spirit of Giving

On Christmas Eve, the team will conclude the year by distributing hundreds of Christmas hams to families in need in Los Angeles. This event will celebrate the holiday spirit of giving, a core value of AHF and its Food for Health program.

Through its innovative and compassionate approach, AHF Food for Health is not only addressing food insecurity but also improving health, fostering community well-being, and advancing the human right to food.
