16 Years of Love Condoms: AHF’s Fight for Global HIV Prevention

February 13, 2025, marks the 16th anniversary of the Love Condoms campaign, originally launched by AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) in West Hollywood, CA. The campaign, featuring the slogan “Love Yourself, Love Your Partner,” was designed to encourage global support for condom use as part of HIV/AIDS prevention efforts. Through the distribution of 10 million high-quality, World Health Organization (WHO)-approved condoms—free of charge—AHF sought to promote safer sexual practices and raise awareness about HIV prevention.

The campaign aimed to contribute to global AIDS control by emphasizing condoms as a primary tool for success. It was inspired by the ABC model—Abstinence, Be Faithful, and Condoms—which had proven effective in countries like Uganda. While abstinence and faithfulness play important roles, the model’s success heavily relies on condom use, one of the most effective methods of preventing HIV transmission.

On July 18, 2009, in New Delhi, India, Love Condoms were launched in conjunction with the “Stay Negative” ad campaign. AHF and AHF Ambassador, Indian actor Ronit Roy, promoted the Valentine’s Day-themed condoms to help combat the stigma associated with purchasing them. As part of this initiative, 1 million condoms were distributed to support HIV/AIDS prevention, reduce sexually transmitted infections, and help prevent unplanned pregnancies. At the time, nearly 2.5 million Indians were living with the virus.

Since its launch, Love Condoms have been distributed in Mexico, Swaziland, Lithuania, South Africa, Estonia, Thailand, Uganda, and Ukraine. Over the years, Love Condoms have become a staple of International Condom Day, reinforcing AHF’s commitment to global HIV prevention.
