Testing America: A Legacy of Free HIV Testing

In March 2010, AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) launched the groundbreaking “Testing America” tour, a six-month initiative designed to expand free HIV testing across the United States. Partnering with NBA legend Magic Johnson, the campaign set out to raise awareness about the HIV/AIDS epidemic while delivering critical testing services to underserved communities.

With a fleet of mobile testing units featuring Magic Johnson’s image, the tour traveled to 48 states, conducting over 5,200 HIV tests in collaboration with local AIDS service organizations. By bringing free, confidential testing directly to communities, the initiative helped break down barriers to healthcare access—particularly for individuals in remote areas or those without easy access to traditional medical services.

Beyond providing essential testing, “Testing America” played a pivotal role in reducing the stigma surrounding HIV testing. By making the process more approachable and less intimidating, the campaign encouraged more people to take control of their health.

The tour’s impact extended far beyond its six-month duration. It laid the groundwork for AHF’s Mobile Team, which continues to operate mobile testing units nationwide—ensuring that vital health services remain accessible to those who need them most. Today, AHF remains committed to the principles of accessibility, education, and public health, working tirelessly to combat HIV/AIDS and improve the well-being of individuals across the U.S. and around the world.
