In August 2006, the global HIV/AIDS community converged in Toronto, Canada, for the XVI International AIDS Conference in an event that brought together advocates, researchers, policymakers, and people living with HIV from around the world. Among the most powerful moments of the week was a massive march and rally led by AHF. With the unifying theme, “AIDS Treatment Now: Time to Deliver,” AHF galvanized thousands of voices in a collective call for universal access to lifesaving antiretroviral therapy.

The march swept through the streets of Toronto, energized by a sea of blue balloons representing the globe and flags from dozens of countries. Activists carried signs declaring “AIDS Drugs for Every Nation,” while banners broadcast the urgency of the moment. The global call to action culminated in the formal presentation of the “Toronto 2006 Treatment Declaration” to conference organizers. The declaration urged world leaders to close the treatment gap for millions of people living with HIV, especially in the Global South.

AHF also used the conference as an opportunity to spotlight success stories from the African continent through its AfricAlive: Portrait of Success exhibit. This powerful photo installation, shot by renowned photographer Dorit Thies, celebrated the triumph of life over death by showcasing people living with HIV who had regained their health through treatment. The exhibit underscored the transformative power of access to medication and highlighted the potential for hope and healing when global health commitments are met.

The 2006 Toronto conference marked a turning point in international AIDS advocacy, and AHF played a key role in driving home the message that treatment is not just a goal, but a human right. AHF’s bold presence and creative activism helped elevate the conversation around treatment equity at a time when millions still lacked access to care.
Nearly two decades later, AHF continues to push boundaries in the fight against HIV/AIDS. AHF’s work at the XVI International AIDS Conference remains a shining example of what canbe achieved through coordinated global action, passionate advocacy, and an unwavering commitment to health justice.
